I still remember what my friend Pablo said when I first friended him on Facebook: “Welcome to the biggest time-waster you’ve ever seen.”
And while this may be true to a point, I have to say that I enjoy Facebook and that the good outweighs the bad.
What I really like about it is how it brings people together, if only in a cyber-kind-of-way. Facts are, I’m pretty lousy at keeping up with my friends and family members, much less those that I’ve lost touch with over the years. So Facebook fills this void in some ways.
I also like the networking aspects of Facebook. It’s definitely pretty cool and at times humorous to see which ghosts from high school or college past will track you down. It’s always the most random people, which I get a kick out of.
I like the idea of having a way to connect to someone just in case the need ever presented itself. There is something comforting to me about knowing that if I needed to reach out to the guy I sat next to in math class in 9th grade, I could. I don’t know how that’s useful, but it works for me.
Here’s something that I find kind of eerie. People that don’t have a Facebook profile don’t exist in that world at all. It’s kind of like The Matrix. Or Back to the Future. Perhaps both.
The Facebook fad reminds me of when cell phones got big a few years back. Some people had to have one right away, and others couldn’t have cared less. It’s the same thing with Facebook. Either it moves you or it doesn’t.
One final bit of advice. Don’t spend your entire life on Facebook. Sign in, say your piece, and get out. Because it can suck you in. As the Greeks said, everything in moderation.
