I wish it was normal for women to wear Old Spice, because after seeing their new ad campaign, even I want to smell like “the man your man could smell like.”
I first saw this commercial while watching the Olympics with my mom. We had just finished discussing the lack of memorable commercials we had seen that night. Then all of a sudden, like an answer to our prayers, Old Spice delivered an engaging, funny and very visually appealing ad. I love everything about this commercial. It’s commanding; while I didn’t literally follow his instructions to “look down, back up,” it caught my attention and made me listen. It’s hilariously funny, playing on female clichés in a corny but witty manner. Hunk on a boat offering me diamonds? Yes, please. And now he’s on a horse? Sounds good to me.
This commercial is only a small part of their campaign. Old Spice has created several other manmercials available for your entertainment. Check them out - although be warned that none, in my opinion, are as clever as “the man your man could smell like.” The website is fun to use, informative, and easy to navigate as well. You can search every product line by type, scent, or problem. Just click on your problem and Old Spice has the solution. For example, click “I smell like a turtle cage” and you’ll see Old Spice High Endurance Long-lasting stick on your screen. Maybe you’re thinking: “I want to slap the scent of America on my face.” Well then you obviously need Old Spice Classic Cologne.
Since joining TCC, I am now much more aware of advertising and the role I play through my use of social media. Immediately after my mom and I saw the commercial, we pulled it up on YouTube to show my dad (who got a huge kick out of it since he’s been using Old Spice antiperspirant forever). I posted the video on several of my friends’ Facebook walls, who in turn shared it with some of their friends. I emailed it to three coworkers. I tweeted the link. Without a second thought, I helped to promote their products in a small way by telling others to view their advertisements.
I’ve never really associated Old Spice with funny and hip before now. I mean, my dad wears Old Spice (sorry, Dad). But the image of the brand is changing. It will be interesting to see if Old Spice sales in today’s younger generation increase as a result of their efforts. So far, their campaign seems to be a hit. The “man your man should smell like” commercial, posted just a couple of weeks ago, has almost 4 million views on YouTube. With headlines like “Meet the Hot New Old Spice Guy” on People and articles in the New York Daily News and the LA Times Blog, Old Spice and its main man, Isaiah Mustafa, are gaining a lot of attention.
Bottom line: Old Spice is right. Women want men who smell like “the man your man could smell like.” And that man smells like jet fuel and punching. If you have his number, please send it to me.
